The Colombo Plan Staff College (CPSC) extends its warm congratulations and heartfelt goodwill to the Republic of Malaysia as the nation celebrates its 69th National Day or Merdeka Day on August 31, 2026. As one of CPSC’s long standing partners in our pursuit of promoting regional excellence in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Malaysia continues to play an important role in strengthening skills development, innovation, and human-resource capacity across the Asia-Pacific region.

Merdeka Day commemorates the independence of the Federation of Malaya on 31 August 1957. The historic declaration at Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur remains a defining moment in the nation’s journey toward sovereignty, self-determination, and national development.

2026 National Day Observance

Malaysia’s 2026 National Day celebration will be held at Dataran Putrajaya under the official theme, “Malaysia MADANI: Kesejahteraan Dinikmati” which may be translated as Malaysia MADANI: Shared Prosperity. The theme conveys an aspiration for an inclusive well-being and shared prosperity, reflecting the importance of ensuring that national progress benefits all Malaysians.

The celebration brings together Malaysians in honouring the nation’s history, identity, and continued aspirations. The Jalur Gemilang, Malaysia’s national flag, is displayed prominently across communities, schools, workplaces, and public spaces as a symbol of patriotism, unity, and shared citizenship.

Dataran Putrajaya serves as the official venue for Malaysia’s 2026 National Day celebration.

Celebration Activities

The Merdeka spirit comes alive once again in Putrajaya, Malaysia during the nation’s Independence Day celebrations

The main celebration at Dataran Putrajaya begins at 7:00 a.m. and features a wide range of ceremonial and public activities. The programme includes a national parade involving military personnel, uniformed services, government agencies, community groups, and other participants.

The key activities are as follows:

  • A national parade and procession involving 77 contingents and more than 10,000 participants;
  • Military, security, and government assets, including a designated public display at the New Millennium Monument;
  • The participation of the Johor Military Force (JMF) for the first time in the National Day celebration;
  • A Royal Malaysian Air Force flypast;
  • Marching bands, decorated vehicles, and other ceremonial displays;
  • Human-graphics and cultural presentations highlighting Malaysia's national identity and unity; and
  • Various community and cultural activities held as part of the broader National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations.

Celebrations will also take place in states and communities throughout Malaysia, enabling citizens to participate in local activities that promote patriotism, national unity, and appreciation of the country’s multicultural identity.

Malaysia’s strength lies in the diversity of its people and the collective commitment to peace, mutual respect, and national harmony. Merdeka Day is an opportunity to honour those who contributed to the country’s independence while recognizing the shared responsibility of every generation to safeguard unity and build a more resilient future.

For the TVET community, the spirit of Merdeka reinforces the value of education, practical skills, innovation, and lifelong learning. These principles are essential to preparing young people and workers for changing industries, emerging technologies, and the demands of a dynamic regional economy.
